MOTAT

Ki Ora bloggers have you ever been to MOTAT… Well on Wednesday the 30th of august MOTAT came to Wesley intermediate school to teach us about simple machines. Can you name any simple machines?… There are 6 simple machines: Pulley, Wedge, Incline plane, Wheel and Axel, Lever, and Finally Screw.

At the start the MOTAT Worker Aiden and Jazmine introduced themselves, Then told us about simple machines and how they work. We then had to get into groups of three to create our own marble run out of little simple machines, Then at the end connect all of it to make a Super marble run. We then had options to make one. The hardest was called The trap door – pulley.

In my group it was, Me, Elijah and Murtaza, and we were pretty smart, so we picked the hardest one of them all, The Trap door pulley. We started off with getting equipment that Aiden and Jazmine provided for us to use. There was a big board each group had with a lot of holes in it. With every board having one letter in the word MOTAT on it. The holes were for the sticks we would put in and the ramps we would stick down with tape.

Our group’s idea was to use 4 of 6 simple machines and create a super marble run. First we got a cardboard ramp and taped it on top of 2 sticks we then put another stick in the middle at the top and taped a cup to it. On the other part of the string it was a lot higher and taped to a cardboard on top of sticks, with a marble on it and ramps under it. The goal was to get the first marble into the cup then pull down the cardboard, making the other marble fall down into another cup.

It worked out great and then we connected it to the other groups marble run. From this experience i learned a lot of great things, like how to work simple machines and also, how to work with my friends without mucking around. The most challenging thing was getting all the equipment and sticking in the sticks, because some of the holes were uneven. In my opinion overall it was a great experience, one of the best i’ve had in a long time.
